GUIDELINES FOR SHAPING AND TRIMMING YOUR NECK BEARD

Regardless of the beard style you sport, there’s one crucial area you need to master: the neck. The neck is a critical spot, and letting your beard grow unchecked here can result in a messy and unkempt look. Here are answers to frequently asked questions like, “How do I find the right neckline for shaving my beard?”

Let’s break it down step by step.

1. HOW TO IDENTIFY THE NECKLINE

The imaginary line to follow when trimming your neck beard isn’t always fixed. For instance, if you’re sporting an under-the-chin beard, specific rules apply. However, for a standard beard style, there’s a general guideline to identify the neckline. Imagine a line running from one earlobe to the other, passing just above the Adam’s apple. Here’s the trick to locate it: stand in front of a mirror, tilt your head back, and place two fingers above your Adam’s apple. This is where the invisible line lies, below which you should trim all the hair.

2. WHAT SHAPE TO GIVE YOUR BEARD

Once you’ve identified this imaginary line, it’s time to start shaving. As we’ve explained in other articles, it’s best to shave right after a warm shower, as this softens the skin, opens up the pores, and minimizes irritation. Generally, there are two shapes to choose from:

  • Squared shape for rounder faces.
  • Rounded shape for more angular faces.

Begin shaving from the center and work your way outward toward one ear, paying attention to the jawline. Once you reach the ear, return to the center and repeat the process on the other side, carefully shaping your beard as you go. If you make a mistake defining the neckline, don’t worry—let the hair grow back and try again in a few days. After just a couple of days, the hair should be long enough to fix the line.

To maintain the look, simply clean up the neck area every couple of days using a beard trimmer.

3. WHICH TOOLS AND PRODUCTS TO USE

Trimming your neck beard is a precision task that requires the right tools and products. To start shaping the neckline, a beard trimmer will suffice, but for completely shaving the area and cleaning up the neck, it’s better to use a razor.

As with any shaving routine, the results depend on the products you use before and after shaving. Before shaving, always apply either shaving foam or cream. And remember, the process isn’t complete without applying an aftershave balm to soothe and protect your skin.

If you’re not confident enough to do it yourself, there’s always a simple and effective solution: visit one of our stores and let one of our professional barbers assist you!
